Only in Oregon: Shop WinCo Foods To Save Money on Groceries in Eugene

Only in Oregon: Shop WinCo Foods
To Save Money
on Groceries in Eugene

Winco Foods in Eugene, OregonThere is a very good reason why the parking lot always seems to be full at the WinCo Foods store in west Eugene, Oregon.

It's because people here know that WinCo has the lowest overall prices for grocery, meat, produce, bakery, bulk, and other necessities for the kitchen.

I know, you're thinking - What about CostcoWalMart SupercenterCash & CarryGrocery Outlet?

These stores all have good prices on grocery items.  But for overall selection and prices, WinCo has these stores beat.

How do they do it?

  1. They don't advertise
  2. You have to bag your own purchases
  3. No matter how many cashiers there are, you usually have to wait in line to checkout
  4. You rarely can find a parking spot close to the entrance

I can't tell you how they compete so well against their better known competition, but they do.  They even have their own online coupons that you can print and take to the store for even greater savings.

WinCo began in 1967 as a discount warehouse store in Boise, Idaho by the name of Waremart.  As the business expanded, the name was changed to WinCo, which stands for Winning Company.  Until I wrote this post, I mistakenly believed the name stood for the states where most of their stores are located - Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and Oregon.

This privately held, employee-owned chain has 87 stores in seven states (WA, ID, NV, CA, OR, UT, AZ) and employs over 14,000 people.  If there is a store near you, check them out and save some money in your grocery budget.

Rick - you're two for two with me tonight! I never even THOUGHT to write about a local grocery store and yet we have a local one that is very special too! If I was moving to an area I'd want to know exactly what you've talked about here. Great job!

Susan: I posted this on the Eugene Oregon Community Facebook page and received a lot of interesting comments from locals about where they prefer to shop and why they do or don't like WinCo.  I find that people find great interest in writing about local day-to-day life and places that they're familiar with or were previously unaware of.

Good morning Rick --  Spokane has two WinCo stores - one located on the North side of town and one located in the Spokane Valley.  Even though they are quite removed from my home and office, I know they are very, very popular here too.  A new store is opening soon in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho number 101 to be exact.  The grocery market is very, very saturated but apparently there is always room for one more! It's great that shoppers have choices.  Have a great day!  Jack
