Fish-Friendly Car Wash Kits Are Available for Free in Eugene, Oregon

Car washes are popular fundraising activities for school, church, and non-profit organizations everywhere.  People hold up signs urging drivers to pull in and get their vehicle washed in exchange for a donation.  It's a fun activity that helps to generate much needed revenues for the groups.

Little thought is given to what happens to the dirty and soapy wash water as it flows into the storm drains and eventually into the local waterways.  The Cities of Eugene and Springfield provide non-profit groups with free fish-friendly car wash kits to direct the dirty water into the sanitary sewer system where it can be treated and then released into the Willamette River.  The flyer below shows who to call for more information and to obtain a kit.  The area code for Lane County, Oregon is 541.

Leave it to Eugene to come up with such a great and much needed idea.  Love it!

Janell: Eugene and Springfield, Oregon residents enjoy some of the purest municipal drinking water in the United States from the Eugene Water and Electric Board.  Organic Style magazine named our water the best in the nation in 2004.  It's a beautiful place to live and people try to keep it that way.  If we can prevent unnecessary pollution, we try.
