Only in Eugene: This Fence "Opens Doors" To The Homeowner's Creativity

Only in Eugene:
The 1960's Lives On In The Whiteaker Neighborhood

Fence made of doors in Eugene's Whiteaker neighbohoodEugene, Oregon is not your typical town.  Especially in the Whiteaker neighborhood near downtown.  This eclectic neighborhood defies stereotypes, but I find it to be the home to some very creative and expressive citizens.

A walk through the neighborhood reveals fresh discoveries that make you smile in appreciation and think to yourself, "Only in Eugene."

That's what I said when I discovered this fence made of brightly painted doors at the southeast corner of 4th and Monroe.  Fourteen doors of different designs are joined together along 4th Avenue to exhibit the imaginative creativity of the artist.  Posts with baskets on top finish off the unique fence unlike any other that I've seen.Fence made of doors in Eugene's Whiteaker neighbohood

Each door has a different painting on it and is worthy of examination by itself.  The fence is along a little traveled residential street, so most of the locals aren't aware of its existence.

I go out of my way sometimes on my way to work to pass by it, smile, and marvel at the artistic whimsy of the person who visualized and created this.

The nice part is that this is but one example of the creative expression on display in this neighborhood.  It's also a hub for entrepreneurial activity and is fast becoming the microbrewery center of Lane County, led by Ninkasi.  The annual Whiteaker Block Party every August is a not-to-be-missed event for many.

Only in Eugene (unless you show me otherwise) will you find a residential fence like this one.
